history of freddy's pizza
In 1957, Frank Deluca, a native of Bracigliano in the province of Salerno, opened a small shop at 5938 W. 16th in Cicero selling only rectangular pizza and three flavors of Italian ice. In 1968, along came Giuseppe Quercia, who moved to Cicero as a teen with his family from Cimitile in the province of Naples. On a walk through the neighborhood one evening with his dad, they realized they were lost! After wandering for a bit, they stumbled upon Freddy's, where they struck up a conversation in Italian with the owner. Joe asked Frank for a job then and there, but Frank said he didn’t need the help. Joe persisted, saying “Let me work for one week without pay and if you like my work you can give me a job.” Well guess what? Joe started work for Frank, and he’s been with the business every since.
In 1970 Frank bought a building down the street that today is the home of Freddy’s Pizza, Gelateria and Italian Grocery. In 1973, Joe bought the business from Frank and transformed it from an American-style grocery store into an authentic Italian deli. In 1978, a beautiful young woman name Ann Marie Tricoci walked into the store … and into Joe’s heart. The two were married in 1983. Joe and Ann Marie continue to run Freddy’s today. Joe is the chef who prepares all the delicious foods and Ann Marie runs the front and handles all the business.
